Often called a mini split due to the two separate components, a ductless system uses a wall mounted fan or head to distribute the air and is connected to an outside unit by electrical and refrigeration lines.  These units can provide both heating and cooling, or just cooling, and are a perfect alternate if a ducted system is not practical.
